SPAMMERS and Bogus Comments

I’ve got a lot of setting that prevent SPAM but sometimes I do get “Comments” that get through and I am just blown away at how amazingly dumb these people are…they could be “BOTS” for all I know – but they are not welcome and are usually trashed – but NOT before I report their e-mail, IP address and any other information I can extract which is usually quite a LOT!

I guess some people have nothing better to do?

I only mention this – as I want to make sure that ALL of our clients including all clients of ButterMilk Media are aware of this problem and that they take IMMEDIATE action to protect themselves from these Negative comments and/or completely off base contact form submissions! DELETE them – mark as spam and IF the same person persists in sending out this insane stuff – then report them!

OR YOU CAN FONT BOMB THEM!

It’s a crazy world out there – and in this OPEN SOURCE world you can never be too CAREFUL – I just uninstalled two of my browsers – started over and changed my passwords yet again!

By: Music Square One & Steve Moore

I first met Bob via Mike Lawson – who was my partner in many endeavors – Bob made the move to Nashville in the 90′s and he bought a place not to far from my home/studio. Bob and Wendy spent a lot of time hanging out over at the house and jamming and we often went out as “couples’ to have dinner – etc.

Wendy & Bob also had me do a lot of work with them on their Royalties with Fleetwood Mac – but kind of behind the scenes as it were. And all of that worked out well.

It’s amazing how small this music of business is – as I’ve worked or known so many members of Fleetwood Mac – including Billy Burnette – another great musician and friend – but Bob also did a tour in 2008 – and who backed him up? None other than Atlanta Rhythm Section whom I was very close with, especially Robert Nix – now that’s just too cool! And it truly is a small world!

But what I really miss about Bob was that he was such a super nice guy – not an ounce or pretension in him despite being a “ROCK STAR” – he was just as humble as could be and an incredible guy – not to mention that he was an amazing musician and incredible songwriter. He loved coming to my studio as it was set up for both recording and for playing live – with all the accoutrements like a light show, all kinds of instruments (drums, guitars, keyboards, basses, pretty much anything you needed to JAM!) and I’ll never forget the first night he came over – and he picked up my Les Paul – (that I had gotten via Mike Lawson when he was in California) and he started in on Ebony Eyes and I played drums – too cool! I was in heaven! Having know the man’s songs and music my whole life – and now I’m playing music with him? But that’s how cool Bob was – he said he felt like he was playing an arena as I turned only the lights, smoke machines, and we just JAMMED! That’s when Bob and I really hit it off – yet another one of my clients that was amazed that the guy in the suit could actually play and had the same passion for music that he and others had!

So many great memories – and I’ll miss him so much – as Bob and Wendy are just super special people! And losing Bob – well – under the circumstances, I know exactly how it all went down from Mike as they were super close. Mike called me when I was on my way to New Orleans – and that was June 9th – which was Wendy’s birthday – I literally have to pull over – and could not drive for a time – I was sick – really sick to hear the whole story as I loved Bob and I hated that he had gotten to a place where he could not even work due to the pain. So I just know that he too is in some great band – still rocking with all of my other dear friends and great musicians that I’ve lost recently. I was blessed just to have known him but even more blessed to call him “FRIEND!”

May you rest in peace my friend and you will always be remembered – your music will last forever – but the memory of who you were to me and so many others is just that much more special!

ROCK ON MY BOB WELCH!

So one day – Robert Nix walks into my office – and we hit off immediately! I remember him coming over to the house and then saying – “I’ve never met an attorney that could play and write like you can!” As music was our BOND first – and then I was his attorney for a long time.

Robert was one of the most upbeat people you could ever meet – no matter how badly things were going when he was sick – he was still saying “let’s get something goin’ and let’s Bite the ____ out of the MOON! “ And he had so many other ONE LINERS – he was GREAT at them!

Robert and I got to spend a LOT of time together and having him come play drums at my Studio was always a huge TREAT! But just knowing Robert you couldn’t help but just LOVE Him for who he was – as he was such an AWESOME GUY – I was just blown away when I heard he had passed away – and I immediately made quick plans to go to the Funeral – as I would NOT have missed that for the WORLD! I will miss him but I know he’s still Rockin’ in a GREAT BAND along with all the other of my friends who’ve passed – it’s a tough time for me – as I’ve lost too many friends as of late – but I’m going to keep on Rockin’ while I still can! As that’s what they would want me to do!

I love you ROBERT! You’ll always be in my heart and mind!

Chris Ethridge

Where do I even begin? I can’t really remember when Chris and I met but it was around the time I moved to Nashville – he would come into town for some session work and stop by my office to see me – when I moved back to Mississippi, I got to spend a lot of time with Chris as he played bass on most of the records that I had produced. A consummate studio musician! And he knew theory better than just about anyone I’ve ever met – he could just hear it – and say no that’s the minor 7th!

Chris was a great bass player – as evidenced by his body of work. But unless you knew him – you would not know that he was one of the most caring and great friends you could have! He was always complimentary of everything and everyone – and was always just great to be around!

There are just way too many place to find his music and work – so I’ll just add a few links here – but I was so sad that he passed away and the funeral was very hard for me – but I know he’s in a better place and playing music in a great band!

Music Square One

Music Publishing vs. Book Publishing

It’s been ten years since the record labels wiped Napster off the face of the earth. Unfortunately for them, hundreds of millions of songs still get shared every month and the music industry is no better off than when the digital revolution started. So they are Still losing money after all these years. But don’t accredit that to P2P or File Sharing – Video Games make more money than the total aggregate of ALL forms of entertainment – movies, music business, TV, radio, theme parks, you name it! Video Games were the real death knell for the Music Business. After all, you’re largest demographic was a younger audience – but when CD’s came out – a lot of people went back to buy their favorites – but that only lasted for a while and now Vinyl is making a comeback – but it’s not going to put a dent in Streaming! Which does NOT pay!

Book publishers went to school on the labels as e-books came into prominence. And now have over 60% of the market share – so watch as more and more book stores close just like record/CD stores did.

Book publishers like our other Company ButterMilk Media which is now putting out MORE BOOKS – we’ve licensed our books to make it easy for consumers to buy them on these new mobile devices whereas the record labels did their first deal to sell downloads five years after MP3s were introduced – and didn’t issue streaming licenses until relatively recently.

It may seem like history to you, but it’s only rock and roll as the labels are still headed the wrong way while book publishers are suing for the right to price their own books potentially making prices more attractive for consumers.

Pandora is the largest source of Internet music royalties to the record labels and Sirius XM is suing for the right to negotiate directly with individual artists. But 400,000 spins on Pandora will get you a grand total of $400.00 – that’s just a ridiculous return as you can’t even pay for the costs of production for that!

Now it’s time for the labels to learn their lesson and it’s also time for Book Publishers to make the change to E-Books! Nobody can say what the future holds, but the cloud, apps, and mobile tech is on the rise and it’s going to increase exponentially! But even with 4G – you’re not going to get what you want as fast as you want it – as the mobile carriers are NOT going to be able to handle the bandwidth!

So don’t be surprised if your phone or other mobile device get throttled back – as there’s ONLY so much bandwidth – and millions of new mobile users coming online every year!

We are definitely living in some interesting times!

May you find the success your looking for! Just be prepared to work HARD FOR IT!

All the best -

Music Square One

Giving you the Truth about the Music Business

If you think that Reverb Nation is doing you any good – think again!

I have been using Reverb Nation for many years now and used to think that it was good deal but not anymore! That’s not to say that they don’t have some decent features, more specifically their widgets. Also their landing pages for FB are OK but I’d rather use BandRX or others.

But as of NOW I’ll never pay Reverb Nation another CENT – and may just take them down from ALL my sites and social nets – as they are pretty much scamming people or should I say preying on those that think they’ll become a star and get tons of fans, and sell tons of music, etc .

So why the change for me? They just charged me $15.00 to get out of my Digital Distribution for a SINGLE (one song!) – and wanted to charge me automatically $39.00 for ONE SINGLE. No way out of that -which is ridiculous.

Further, they auto-charged me last year for that SINGLE and Mega Song Storage – with ZERO NOTICE – and would NOT do anything about it – except to ask me to pay even MORE MONEY as a take down fee! Way more than just adding a single or even a full CD up to the digital retailers!

Let’s get one thing straight – I’m NOT a rock star – I don’t play music professionally all the much anymore since cover charge hasn’t changed in over 30 years – it’s STILL $5.00 so you can’t really “tour” anymore unless you can draw and since I don’t

I had released a single just to see how it all worked – when I should have just released my entire CD – and now I’ve found out all of that was a huge mistake!

First almost 98% of my fans are OTHER BANDS and don’t get me wrong I love MY FANS (a small group to be sure) – but I doubt they aren’t going to buy my music! Their Digital Distribution can’t hold a candle to Band Camp which you control and only pay 10% but you have to drive TRAFFIC to that page/site – but to get to the Major Distributors – go with CD BABY – one time fee – no automatic billing without NOTICE and they keep a small percentage of your Royalties – it’s cheaper to put up a single and a FULL ALBUM is about the same as you pay at Reverb Nation but that’s a ONE TIME FEE!

And they sort of get you hooked in with their “royalties for whatever” – which is about $0.02 per month if you’re lucky. And I can assure you that this is TRUE of many other bands – heck I’ve made more money from Reverb Nation than a FULL TIME TOURING BAND! But they are also using a TON of other music services which I don’t use as I’m not doing this FULL TIME by ANY MEANS – but I do keep up with what’s going on in the Music Business! And just like my readers to know THE TRUTH!

The Value of Getting a Degree for the Music Business (No matter what aspect)

Everyone – or seemingly almost everyone wants to be in the MUSIC BUSINESS – and I can understand that – as who doesn’t like music? But the MUSIC BUSINESS is not for the faint of heart -

“The music business is a cruel and shallow money trench, a long plastic hallway where thieves and pimps run free, and good men die like dogs. There’s also a negative side.” (Hunter S. Thompson)

Just because you’ve gotten a degree in ANY aspect of the music business – does not even come close to guaranteeing you a career in the Music Industry – in fact, your chances are SLIM at BEST!

It never ceases to amaze me that there are so many schools that are more than happy to take your money – to give you a “Certificate’ – to hang on your wall – and that’s pretty much all you’ll get out of it in the long term. Sure there will be a lucky few that will get a job – but very few right out of school – and even fewer that will actually be able to maintain a decent career!

As PT BARNUM once said – “There’s a Sucker Born Every day!”

I’m not saying don’t chase your dreams – but you may want to do some SERIOUS RESEARCH about the number of applicants vs. the number of jobs being handed out – and it won’t take long to figure out that unless you come up with a NEW WAY to monetize the music business – you’re stuck with what we’ve got and there’s JUST NOT ENOUGH MONEY or BUSINESS to go around!

You might want to think about getting into Video Games as those sales FAR OUT SHADOW all forms of entertainment COMBINED!

What can I say – it’s the TRUTH as I see it!

Best of luck in your future endeavors…

All the best…as always,
